3 small changes to help you find balance as a veterinarian

By Rob Marr, Founder – The Lost VET

Achieving a harmonious work-life balance is a common challenge for veterinarians, given the demanding nature of the profession. Implementing small, strategic changes can significantly enhance your overall well-being and job satisfaction.

1. Organize Your Calendar

Begin by scheduling personal activities—such as vacations, hobbies, social events, and family time—into your calendar before work commitments. Communicate to your team that these personal times are non-negotiable, and reciprocate by respecting their time off. Planning these activities at least 90 days in advance increases the likelihood of maintaining a balanced schedule. Regularly revisiting and updating your calendar, perhaps quarterly, can help sustain this balance.

2. Prioritize Self-Care

Dedicate time to leisure activities and hobbies outside of work. Look ahead to the next quarter and decide which events, meals, and social gatherings you wish to attend. If finding time for a walk is challenging, schedule it in your diary and treat it with the same commitment as a work meeting. While you can reschedule these personal appointments, aim never to cancel them. Inform your family and friends about your planned personal time to reinforce your commitment.

3. Reflect on Your Professional Purpose

Veterinary professionals are deeply dedicated to animal health and well-being. It’s easy to lose sight of why you entered this field initially. To fulfill your vocation and ambitions, surround yourself with supportive individuals. Recognize that interactions with people are central to your ability to practice great medicine. Improving relationships with colleagues and clients can help you reconnect with your original motivations and enhance job satisfaction.

Reflective Questions

Consider the following to guide your journey toward better balance:

  • When was the last time you scheduled personal activities into your calendar?
  • How often do you invest in your own development?
  • Who can support you in staying engaged with your personal and professional growth?

By implementing these small changes, you can work towards a more balanced and fulfilling life as a veterinarian.
